For those who aren’t Chinese or familiar with oldies, here’s some background info: 月亮代表我的心 is the name of an old but extremely famous Chinese love song. Translated loosely, its title (and chorus line) means ‘My Heart is Like the Moon’.
And as you would imagine, I have always wondered what exactly the lyrics meant. I mean, the moon? But then, I’ve never really felt the urge to find out more about it.
Well, not until recently. And to be honest, the simplicity of the explanation* struck me quite by surprise.
For as long as mankind could remember, the moon have been revolving around the Earth. And this happens for a very simple reason: its attraction towards the Earth is too strong for it to ever leave its orbit. So when you’re in love with someone, you’ll realise that your heart is just like the moon, constantly revolving around the person, constantly attracted to him/her. And what you’ll realise too is that he/she will naturally mean the world to your heart.
This painting was one that took me the shortest time to complete, and was done on impulse one night, when my thoughts wandered far and brought me back to a time when my heart beat like the moon.
*Disclaimer: this is just one of the many interpretations out there, but it’s one that I felt most aptly explains the lyrics.
